BLING (Building Livability in New Gloucester) is excited to launch several initiatives this fall that advance our goal of making New Gloucester a livable life long community for all. Our projects focus on helping to keep homes and roads safe; and ways to make getting around town easier (and more enjoyable) for all ages now and in the future.
You can learn more about some of these upcoming projects at our table at the NGFR Open House and BBQ on Saturday, October 14 from 10 am to 2 pm at 611 Lewiston Rd.
- FREE SMOKE ALARMS AND SAFETY CHECKS – Sign up for a FREE Smoke Alarm that will be installed by a team of volunteers from the Red Cross, NG Fire and Rescue and BLING. You can also sign up to be part of a volunteer team. The installations will be on November 12.
- PACE CAR PROJECT – Sign a PACE CAR PLEDGE. Help calm traffic and reduce speed around New Gloucester. You will join more than 40 residents who have signed the pledge and are committed to driving the posted speed limits around town. We can all do our small part to make getting around town easier and safer in New Gloucester.
- VISION ZERO Be informed about ways to make our rural roads safer. Find out more about how rural communities in Maine (including Gray and New Gloucester) are planning to eliminate serious injuries and death from traffic accidents. Representatives from the Greater Portland Council of Governments (GPCOG) will be on hand to talk about the launch of this project in GNG.
- PROPOSED TRAIL (UNTIL RAIL) THROUGH NEW GLOUCESTER. The Casco Bay Trail Alliance kicked off our fall Community Engagement series with a fact-filled presentation on the proposed trail from Portland to Auburn that would be built in part on the unused St. Lawrence and Atlantic rail line through New Gloucester. This is the beginning of a long term planning, funding and construction process. Now is the time for residents and communities along the trail to show support to the DOT and their legislators to make this vision move to reality. Other towns have already voted support for the trail. New Gloucester is next up to do so.
- SINGLE FAMILY HOUSING REPAIR GRANTS. Housing Repair Loans and Grants available. We will have information available on how you can apply to the USDA Rural Development program to get a home repair loan.
