Screech, crash and a flash of silver: Crash in the Lower Village

Damage to parked cars at Intervale Pizza

A silver van with two young men inside sped down Route 231 through the Lower Village, lost control and hit two cars parked in front of Intervale Pizza Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was in the parked cars or in the parking area at the time.

The car swerved up on an embankment below the store and finally came to a stop partway down the hill. New Gloucester Fire Rescue and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office personnel arrived promptly. Apparently the occupants of the car were injured, but no details were confirmed.

The wrecked parked cars belong to the owner and a staff member at Intervale Pizza who said he had “just put the plates on the car this morning.” Witnesses estimated the silver van was going between 50 and 60 MPH, in a 30 MPH zone. One person said, “I heard the screech, and then a big crash. All I saw was a flash of silver as they flew by.”

NGX will share more information as it becomes available from the Sheriff’s Office.
