Traffic study in the Lower Village

|Debra Smith|

As part of the Vision Zero project, GPCOG (Greater Portland Council of Governments) has used Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) traffic data to identify four “critical safety intersections” in New Gloucester:

• Upper Village: Rte 231/ Bald Hill Rd and Rte 100,
• Lower Village: Rte 231 and Gloucester Hill / Cobb’s Bridge Roads
• Pineland: Rte 231/ Morse Road
• Rte 100 and Jack Hall/ Town Farm Roads

GPCOG receive funding to conduct a traffic safety at one of these intersections–  in the Lower Village– using Miovision technology. GPCOG planner Harold Spetla explained the data was collected over several days in June, using equipment to record the movement of vehicles cars and trucks, as well as pedestrians and bicycles.

These data will be analyzed by Miovision, and GPCOG staff will take the next steps to generate a set of recommendations for improving safety in this intersection.
