Earth Day is a reminder of the interconnectedness we share with the planet and its diverse species. Each year on April 22, we are encouraged to reflect on the impact our actions have on the environment and the increasingly urgent need to protect it. As we continue to consume the Earth’s natural resources, it’s crucial to understand that our choices—big and small—affect the health of the Earth. Reducing waste is a simple yet effective way to minimize our environmental footprint. For example, buying less and avoiding disposable items like plastic bottles, can significantly reduce pollution. Refillable water bottles, reusable bags, and sustainable products are all practical alternatives to single-use goods. Rather than a big bulky plastic laundry detergent jug, consider the new and near waste free laundry detergent sheets. Many household products are increasingly available in non-plastic packaging.
The use of chemicals in our homes and gardens is another area to examine. Consider alternative methods of insect control before applying pesticides. If necessary, use pesticides exactly as instructed on the label with consideration of the other insects and bugs you want in a healthy ecosystem. Lawns are a virtual dead zone for the environment, and many people are converting some lawn space into meadows for season-long beauty.

This Earth Day, and maybe every day moving forward, we can take responsibility for our actions and work towards a healthier, more sustainable future for all species that call this planet home.
The New Gloucester Environmental Resources Committee is committed to working with the community to promote Earth Day principles all year long. Our activities include promoting recycling and composting, educating on invasive species, pollinator friendly yards, and working with other local groups in planning for a climate resilient community.
