A historic Shaker barn was raised on Wednesday at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, a key step in an ambitious and essential restoration project. Looking on, Brother Arnold Hadd said, “These guys are amazing,” as specialty crews from Preservation Timber Framing of Berwick and Geddes Building Mover of Bow, New Hampshire, worked in tight choreography.
Visitors from near and far came to watch, among them photographers–including NGX contributor Diantha Grant–videographers, reporters, and at least four engineers that we know of. Ursula Jackson of Lisbon Falls marveled at now-visible 200-year-old timbers and builders’ marks, musing, “And think how old the tree was.” Jackson said she “had to” drive over and witness the work after reading about the barn-raising on Facebook.
Work on the barn restoration will continue through the summer. Learn more about the project and follow its progress on the Shaker Village website and at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Facebook.
