If you get a call from someone claiming that you have won a big prize from Publishers Clearing House, it’s a scam. The caller will inform you that someone in Maine just won the big prize, of several million dollars plus a car, and uses high-pressure tactics to try get you to accept second prize of some huge amount. they’ll deliver a check to your house if you agree to give them personal information and pay for taxes, delivery, etc.
These scammers operate all over the country, but they’re calling Mainers right now, including residents of New Gloucester. See this news report from Florida.
These scammers are likely not affiliated with Publishers Clearing House, but the real company has also had a history of deception. In June 2023, Publishers Clearing House paid a $18.5 million+ settlement to consumers for defrauding them.
Let the old adage, “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” be your guide. Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers, and never provide any personal information over the phone.
