Proposed gravel pit off Outlet Road to get review at April 4 Planning Board

Site plan review of an application by Duayne Maschino and Steven Maschino for a 29-acre gravel pit off Outlet Road is on the Planning Board’s April 4 agenda. The meeting begins at 7 pm in the Meetinghouse and will be broadcast on local cable and live-streamed on Castus at this link.

The proposed 29-acre pit, to be known as Chandler Pit, is part of a 164-acre parcel in the Farm and Forest, Limited Residential Shoreland, Resource Protection, and Groundwater Protection Overlay Districts (Map 6 Lot 42-B). It is located east of the existing Maschino Pit off Outlet Road. Access to the site would be on the same right-of-way used for the Maschino Pit.

According to the application, the entire parcel lies within the Groundwater Overlay District but no portion of Chandler Pit is within the Resource Protection District. The parcel has streams and wetlands and is described as forested and undeveloped except for old logging roads. Five groundwater monitoring wells are on the property.

The Maschinos propose to operate Chandler Pit in three 10-acre phases over the course of 20 to 30 years, depending on supply; they would reclaim each excavated area as they go. Hours of operation would be from 7 am to 8 pm, in accordance with the town’s mineral ordinance. According to the application, traffic along Outlet Road and other access roads is “not expected to increase.”
