Programming, projects, budgets, as Parks and Rec Committee meets

| Cathy Gregory |

The New Gloucester Parks and Recreation Committee met on Tuesday, September 21, in the Community Building. Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Rodríguez updated the committee on a variety of topics including programming, projects, and budget.

Royal River Conservation Trust (RRCT) is asking Parks and Recreation and the Environmental Resources Committee to assist in development and fundraising to form a trail system on their recently acquired property on the Intervale. Rodriguez wants to know, “What is the vision that the community will support?”

Select Board Liaison to the committee Dustin Ward suggested that the two committees find a way for the townspeople to speak to the issue. He noted that the only outlet for townspeople has been the public comment section at select board meetings, which doesn’t allow for exchange of ideas.

Committee member Michael Fralich will assume the role of liaison between the two town committees and RRCT. Separate from the RRCT project, Fralich would like to clear a trail from the Town Hall to the Congregational Church for safe walking in the Lower Village.

There was much discussion on budget priorities for the upcoming year, with maintenance of existing buildings and grounds being a priority. “Taking care of what we have is the basics,” Rodriguez said.

Full minutes for the meeting will be posted at the Parks and Recreation Committee’s page on the Town website.

The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee will be held in the library on Tuesday, October 12th at 5:30 PM.
