Please join New Gloucester Historical Society trustee Phil Blake and curator Tom Blake on Thursday March 19 for a look back at the history of the New Gloucester Highway Department. Phil served as assistant foreman and will share recollections from his 21 years in the department, while Tom has assembled several photos for an accompanying slideshow presentation.

Tom Blake shares details about this photo: This is a c.1891 photograph from our family collection that includes my great-great-grandfather Herbert Blake, seated with the reins, and his father Phil (my Dad’s namesake – more or less) Eliphaz Phillips Blake, standing at the wheel, who was the head of the road crew, on their “road machine.” Apparently it was in our genes, as my Dad, Everett Philip Blake, was the road grader operator here for many years and a familiar sight to all those who lived on dirt roads in town, and will talk about the many changes he saw since joining the town crew in 1977.

The Blakes’ talk takes place Thursday, March 19th, 7 pm, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Rd. (Rte. 231). Public invited. Refreshments served.
