Parks & Rec Committee meets, looks ahead

| Cathy Gregory |

The primary focus of the Parks & Recreation Committee meeting on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, was strategic planning. The committee reviewed the strengths and weaknesses of the department, opportunities and challenges, mission and values, and mandates.

The group discussed collaboration with the Gray Parks & Recreation Department. In regard to joint programming, committee member Laura Sturgis said, “These kids go to school together. They ought to be able to play together.” The group agreed that while neither Gray nor New Gloucester has all the facilities needed for programming on their own, together they have what they need.

Parks & Recreation Director Sarah Rodriguez said that Gray-New Gloucester Little League continues to investigate the Bennett Road site as an alternative to the Intervale site for ballfield development. In addition, conversations are under way exploring possible plans for the 174-acre parcel Royal River Conservation Trust recently acquired in the Lower Village from the Chandlers.

Rodriguez also gave the committee her monthly overview of current programming. She continues to explore transportation options for winter skiing which is proving challenging. Programming and registration information can be found at this link.
