Parks and Recreation Committee looks ahead

| Cathy Gregory |

The monthly meeting of the Parks & Recreation Committee was held on May 11th via Zoom.   Sarah Rodriguez, Recreation Director and staff liaison to the committee, gave updates on programming, CIP and budget, the Environmental Resource Committee “Seeds to Plant” event, and the Royal River Conservation Trust (RRCT)/Gray-New Gloucester Little League (GNGLL) project.

Rodriguez is exploring possible licensing for the Kids Club. Kids Club is currently license exempt.   She anticipates a Kids Club surplus of about $8,000 at the end of the year and talked about ideas for using the money to benefit the club.

Calling the RRCT/GNGLL project a “hot topic,” Rodriguez said citizens attending recent public meetings at the ball field raised concerns about parking and roadway safety, the watershed and the wetlands, birds, and light/noise pollution.  She spoke recently with Nate Stone of the GNGLL who said they are investigating alternatives to find “what pleases the most people.”

Parks and Recreation will handle the parking at the Community Fair.  Donations will be taken to benefit the scholarship fund.

Rodriguez recently spoke to Michael Graham from Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.  Michael may be able to help find a source for benches for the Fairgrounds as well as the potential for offering programs such as classes or a hike on Shaker property.

The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee is June 8th, 5:30pm, via Zoom.
