McHenry, who serves as chairman, said he and his wife “found a home we fell in love with” in North Yarmouth. They put their New Gloucester home on the market on Jan. 17, and three days later it was under contract.
“Everything just fell into place,” McHenry said.
If all goes as planned, McHenry will leave three months before his term is complete. At the March 7 meeting, the Board of Selectmen will decide whether to schedule a special election or to wait until the election in June to fill the vacancy, Selectman Stephen Hawthorne said.
Until then, Hawthorne said the four remaining members of the board will either elect a new chairperson to run the next two meetings, or allow Vice Chairman Lindsay Chase to run the meetings until June.
Hawthorne said working with McHenry was an “absolute pleasure. He’s very passionate about what he does, and I think he tries to take the best from both sides.”
“He’s worked very hard for the town’s interest,” Hawthorne said. “He’s been there when the town has needed him.”
Town Manager Paul First said McHenry is “detail-oriented, knowledgeable and passionate about the community. It’s been a pleasure to work with him.”
“When you lose someone with the experience Josh had,” First said, “they will certainly be missed.”
McHenry said it will be hard to leave New Gloucester, which was “a very welcoming community to move into and get involved in. Thank you to the citizens for the opportunity to serve, and to work together with people with opposing viewpoints to find common ground where we can.”
