Library budget gets resounding approval

By margin of almost ten to one, voters on Tuesday approved a library budget of $102,033 for the current fiscal year.

According to deputy clerk Kim Getchell, the results broke down as follows:

  • Yes: 519
  • No: 57
  • Blank: 1
  • Total votes cast: 577

The December 15 special ballot was the community’s third vote on a library budget, an issue that proved contentious as well as protracted. But as election day approached, “Vote Yes December 15” signs appeared widely across town.

Town manager Brenda Fox-Howard told the board of selectmen at their December 14 meeting that the hiring process and job postings for the library director and assistant librarian positions would begin right away if the budget were approved. She anticipated a 4-to-6 week search process, and library services–perhaps curbside initially–resuming after that.
