General Incident Description: New Gloucester Fire Alarm transmitted a desk box for a brush fire threatening a building at 279 Lewiston Road. Engine 2 and Ambulance 1 arrived on scene to find an area of brush burning behind a residence. Engine 2 stretched a 1 3/4 inch attack line and began fire attack. Gray Car 1 arrived on scene shortly after, assuming command. Initial companies had the fire under control quickly. Companies worked to overhaul and assure all hot spots were mopped up. Companies made up and were in service and in quarters at 2:01 PM.

Factors: Dry fuels and wind
Cause: Disposal of ashes from a fireplace.

PSA: When disposing of ashes from a fireplace, ensure they are out. Ashes can hold enough heat to start a fire days after they are removed from a fireplace. NFPA recommends disposing of ashes in a tightly covered metal container at least 10 feet from the house, and dousing them to ensure they are out. For more information on safe wood stove burning, please contact the fire department.
