I was – and am – concerned over the discussions to be had about downsizing the New Gloucester Library’s budget. My understanding is that this downsizing will possibly decrease the hours of operation and eliminate a staffing position. I am very much against this idea.

I have lived in New Gloucester for 12 years now. The library has been a staple for me during that time.

  • When we first moved here, we were homeschooling our daughter. The library became a valuable resource – not just for reading and research materials, but also because their impressive staff were always on hand to problem-solve, to help my daughter think through how to find answers.
  • When my husband and I required my daughter to do some form of volunteer work as part of her homeschooling, we were impressed by her making the library a first choice. It was through this volunteer job that she learned the value of customer service and interacting with people of all ages and abilities.
  • Before I purchase a book, I’ll often borrow it from the library to make sure it’s worth owning. The library has saved me tons of money! And, of course, there are the book sales. I love going to these not only because I know I’ll happen upon a number of great finds, but because I know the money is going back to the library.
  • I’ve been consistently impressed by the library’s offerings to the community – from the overnights to the special events planned to meeting space in its beautiful building. The library is very much the town’s hub.

Sue and Carla are both incredibly kind and helpful and their skill sets cannot be underestimated. Keeping them both on board ensures outstanding customer service and prevents staffing burn-out.
Please, NG residents, speak up and keep the library budget flush! Our community needs it!
