Donald E. Targett, 80 of New Gloucester, Maine, went to his eternal home early Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Medical Center in the arms of his loving wife of 58 years.

Don was born July 11, 1943 in Stratton, Maine, son of Edwin Stoddard and Annetta R. (Murray) Targett. He was the youngest out of 8 brothers, and he had 3 sisters. He attended schools in Stratton and Rangeley, Maine. After marrying Bertha in March 13,1965, Don began working for H.P. Hood and retired after 25 years. After retiring, Don had several part time jobs including mowing the fairway at Poland Spring Golf Course, driving trucks for local businesses, and in his younger years as a bartender at the Gray Amvets.

Don was an avid outdoorsman and was an excellent hunter and fly fisherman. Don enjoyed fiddleheading with Bertha. Don loved country music, especially George Jones, and knew all all the words to all the songs.

Don loved having family gatherings at his home and in the summertime, you could find him in the screen house by the pool, pouring a cold beer or out at the horseshoe pits playing a friendly game. Don enjoyed trips to Canada to fish the Miramichi River with his brothers and Canadian cousins. Don would also take trips to Pennsylvania to get his brother John and go fish for Walleye.

He is survived by his wife Bertha Cannon Targett of New Gloucester. Son Mark W. Noonan of Portland and his wife Chiara Batelli, his daughter Lisa D. Targett of New Gloucester. His son Ricky D. Targett of New Gloucester and his wife Beverly Pellerin Targett. His grandchildren, Jenna Marie Targett of Auburn, Courtney Ann Targett of Wilton and Fiance Ryan J. Kalinyak, Lindsey Targett of New Gloucester.  Great-Granddaughter Rayna D. Kalinyak. Sister Diane Targett Pelkey and Husband Tom of New York. Sister-in-laws Betsy Targett and Renee Targett. Don was pre-deceased by sister, Mildred Milliken Targett, Dorothy Targett King. Sister-In-Laws, Ruth, Rita, Donna, Mary Ann and Rocky Targett. Brothers Edwin (Ted), Hugh L, David, Victor, Erwin, John, and Herbert (Mike) Targett.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday September 29, 2023 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home.
