On August 6th, the Sabbathday Lake Shakers will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the day in 1774 when the first Shakers arrived in America, pioneering racial and gender equality in America and launching a legacy of inventions like the circular saw blade, flat broom, paper seed envelope, and more.
The Shakers’ Arrival Day will be celebrated with a huge fireworks display onsite at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on August 6th at 9 pm. The public is welcome to celebrate this historic milestone with the Shakers. Spectators may arrive after 8 pm for the 9 pm show, which will be a continuous 15-18 minutes of grand-finale bursts. Free admission and roadside parking.
Earlier in the day of August 6th, visitors may attend a commemorative worship service at 10 am, a special dedication ceremony by the United States Postal Service for the Shaker Design stamp series at 1 pm, recognitions led by Maine’s Congressional delegation at 2 pm, and a presentation of future Shaker Village plans and projects at 3 pm. These special commemorations will be held in the brick Dwelling House at Shaker Village. At 7 pm, the Shakers and visitors will gather in the historic 1794 Meeting House to sing Shaker songs to close the day’s programming before the 9pm fireworks display.
Join the Sabbathday Lake Shakers and their friends for this 250th celebration!
