NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine — The superintendent of Maine School Administrative District 15 says all students are safe following a safety issue on a school bus Thursday afternoon that led to a road closure in New Gloucester and a response from the Maine State Police Bomb Squad.

The Cumberland County Regional Communications Center said Ricker Road, which is part of Route 122, is closed between Bald Hill Road and the Auburn line due to “an ongoing incident.” That section of the roadway is approximately 0.7 miles long.

Maine’s Total Coverage requested comment from MSAD 15 Superintendent Craig King after receiving word that the road closure was caused by an issue on a school bus.

King informed Maine’s Total Coverage that there was a safety issue on Bus 13 during the drop-off run for Gray-New Gloucester Middle School and Gray-New Gloucester High School students.

According to King, all students and bus drivers are safe. Students who were on that bus will be on their way home “very soon,” and alternative transportation for elementary students on Bus 13 is en route, the superintendent said.

A spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety said a Maine State Police K-9 and a bomb unit technician have responded to the scene and are assisting local law enforcement.

Officials are asking people to avoid the area until further notice.
