Bennett Road bridge closure and detour coming June 21

Starting on Monday June 21, the bridge on Long Bennett Road spanning the Turnpike will be closed for repairs. The closure may last as long as 56 days, according to the Turnpike Authority. Signs are already up, and once work begins, traffic will be detoured via Snow Hill Road, Sabbathday Road, Mayall Road, and Route 100.

A crew from CPM Constructors in Freeport was already on site doing prep work one recent afternoon. They explained that the work will focus on the deck surface and approaches to the bridge where signs of corrosion and deterioration are evident even to the untrained onlooker’s eye.

Along with protecting the structural integrity of the bridge, the result of the $537,000 project should be a safer and smoother ride for the 527 vehicles that cross the bridge on a typical day.
