An open letter in response to the swastika incident

|In Our Opinion|

As residents of New Gloucester, we are saddened and appalled to hear of an antisemitic symbol being displayed in our town. We condemn all acts of intolerance and we will not waver in our support for our neighbors targeted by hateful symbols.

As community members, we strive to create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive to people of all races, religions, national origins, genders, abilities, and sexual orientations. Symbols of hate aimed at one group not only threaten that group but also create an environment of fear and intimidation for all marginalized groups.

This horrendous act of hatred proves that there is still much work to be done to build an inclusive and welcoming New Gloucester. Physical symbols of hate are reminders of deeper sentiments that are alive under the surface. It is the responsibility of all residents of New Gloucester to not only condemn this act but also cultivate a community that welcomes, celebrates, and promotes the diversity within our town. We are encouraged to see our Select Board and Town Manager make a statement condemning this act and its goals of stoking fear in our community. We hope that they will continue to hold these ideals of inclusivity at the forefront of all decisions being made by the town.

To our New Gloucester neighbors who feel unsafe or unsettled: we stand with you. We pledge to support you and work together toward peace, respect, and understanding within our community. We also call upon our elected officials and local community groups to similarly condemn this deeply disturbing incident and work to promote inclusivity and diversity here in New Gloucester.
