About our dirt roads…

| Letter to the editor from Brian Whitney |

Plans may be in the works to pave New Gloucester’s dirt roads in the near future. It is my hope that the town will not waste the taxpayers’ money on paving roads that do not have a proper base. Hatch Road is a good example. There is no question that the road does not have a good base thanks to many years of improper materials being put on the road. My car sunk up to the floor boards last spring 20 minutes after they graded it. That says a lot! It is obvious that if it is paved as is, it will collapse within a year or two. Then we will be stuck with a bumpy road for many years since it can’t be graded.

The town should consult a qualified engineer before wasting money on paving improperly built roads.

The town has a strict policy on road construction with new roads that they take over, such as new developments, etc. The town should follow their own policy on the existing roads they have.
