A political divide

|In my opinion, Peter Bragdon|

I want to start out by saying that this is solely my opinion. This does not represent any boards or committees that I may chair or sit on. This opinion piece is just that and not directed at any person or group.

After the most recent election, it is apparent that there is an ever increasing political divide in this town. It is saddening that it has come to this point.  The push of political parties in the Select Board and School Board races was disappointing. Seeing a recent headline that calls our recent election ‘Most highly Contested Election Ever’ can be interpreted a couple different ways and only supports my concern.

On town issues, it has turned into a competition of who can get more support, who has the majority viewpoint, which means who is going to get their way! It is almost appearing to be a contest of who can win. The divide is present in our boards and committees.  The push to get more of alike thinking or politically aligned people on a committee is very evident.

As corny as it sounds, we shouldn’t be worrying about the R team or the D team, we should be worrying about representing team NG.   I know when I turn into the town hall parking lot, I drop any personal political affiliation and represent what it best for the town.

We all want New Gloucester to be a certain way. There are almost 6,000 (including children) people in this town.   With all those differing views and then considering laws, policies, ordinances, the comprehensive plan, financial impacts, the constitutions, things may end up differently then we personally wanted or expected. Sometimes we are in the majority, sometimes we are not.  What matters is what is best for New Gloucester.

I even see the divide in the meeting house. Generally, political parties are sitting together and speaking on the same topic together. We see it in letter writing to the select board or letters to be read at a meeting, it becomes a competition of who can get more letters sent. I understand and appreciate rallying for your thoughts or beliefs, and I really appreciate public comment, but the divide is very much present.

The tone that people address each other has changed. Difference in opinions have even prevented neighborly friendships.  My father instilled in me:  enter as friends, say what you need to say, shake hands, share a beverage, and leave as friends.

In closing, I am just saddened by the way we have become.  I understand that there will always be some political divide, but this level is not okay.  Let’s come to table thinking about everyone, let’s think about our neighbors, let’s think about New Gloucester.
