Town charter advocates prevail; NG voters support Arata and Claxton

In November 3 results as reported by the Town, New Gloucester residents voted to create a town charter commission, with 1,922 votes in favor and 1,580 against. A similar ballot measure narrowly failed in 2019, by a margin of 387 to 391.

In races for the Maine Legislature, New Gloucester voters favored the incumbents. In a rematch of their 2018 race, Representative Amy Arata received 2,036 votes and Misty Coolidge 1,501 for House District 65 (New Gloucester and part of Poland). With Poland results in, the Press Herald is reporting a win for Arata with 3,206 votes to 2,193 for Coolidge.

For the District 20 Senate seat (New Gloucester, Poland, Minot, Mechanic Falls, Auburn), Senator Ned Claxton received 1,800 votes in New Gloucester, and challenger Matthew Leonard 1,705. With all precincts reporting, according to the Press Herald, Claxton retained his seat with 11,790 votes to Leonard’s 10,339.

Senator Susan Collins prevailed locally with 2,020 votes to Sara Gideon’s 1372; Lisa Savage trailed at 163 and Max Linn at 51.

In the First District Congressional race, Republican challenger Jay Allen edged incumbent Democrat Chellie Pingree in New Gloucester, 1,806 to 1,751.

And in the presidential vote, Donald Trump edged Joe Biden, 1757 to 1720.
