The board of selectmen is holding a question & answer meeting on Wednesday August 12 at 7 pm via Zoom about the town library and planning department budget articles that will be voted on in a special election on September 15.

Questions or comments about the budget may be sent in advance to smyers@newgloucester.com. They will be forwarded to the board.

Citizens voted down warrant articles for the town library and the planning department in the July 14 election. Since then, the board of selectmen has met with the budget committee and decided on recommended amounts to send to voters in September.

For the library, the select board has proposed $96,026, which reflects 30 hours per week for the assistant librarian position, an increase over the 20 hours in the board’s July 14 warrant recommendation but a cut from the position’s current 36 hours.

The September warrant article would fund the planning department at $60,046, reflecting a town planner position at 36 hours with benefits, the same amount recommended in July but voted down. Since then, the budget committee has clarified that they, too, recommend approval of $60,046 for the department.
