Eileen Mosely Young, 94, died peacefully at home with her daughter by her side on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Born in Beverly, MA, on July, 29, 1921, the daughter of Frank G. and Sara W. Clark, she lived in Auburn, Maine from 1922-1943, where she attended Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1938.
She was married to Leroy N. Young in Aug., 1943, and moved to Long Island, New York, returning to Maine in 1974 where she and Roy lived at Sabbathday Lake in New Gloucester.
While in New York, Eileen was active in the Boy and Girl Scouts, and served as a member and sewing instructor for the Extension Service. She was superintendent ofSunday School at the Farmingdale Methodist Church, and worked as a bookkeeper for Murray Tuck, Accountant, and later for Sisto Rotondi and Sons, Builders. Eileen and her family traveled to Maine each summer where for fifteen years they rented a rustic camp on Sabbathday Lake. Roy and Eileen eventually bought a cottage on Sabbathday, where they welcomed family and friends, and were instrumental in instilling a livelong love of Maine in several generations of their family.
After moving to Maine, Eileen was employed for nine years as Finance Director for the Portland YWCA. She was a member of the Summit Springs Golf Club, the Ladies League, and was active in the first Congregational Church of New Gloucester. She and Roy spent many years (well into their nineties) in the happy company of a group of friends, playing cards and dominoes, going to dinner at Rolandeau’s restaurant, and traveling the country. Eileen also joined a group of close fellow high school graduates for monthly luncheons until just a few years ago.
Eileen will be remembered by her family for entertaining her them on all sorts of occasions, frequently baking and decorating elaborate cakes for birthdays, graduations and weddings. She also taught her daughters and granddaughters the joys of sewing and knitting.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Cruz of New Gloucester and Jacalyn Young of Santa Rosa, CA; four grandchildren (Deborah Danforth of Auburn, Dale Young of Shelton, WA, Daniel Cruz of Vass, NC, and Frances Cruz of Los Angeles, CA); one great-grandchild (Kelsey Earle of Mechanic Falls), one great-great-grandchild (Kelsey’s son, Kai Wesley Earle), and three generations nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased in death by two brothers (Irving and Billy Clark), her husband, Roy Young, her son, Irving Young, and Irv’s wife, Laura. She is also survived by best friend and former sister-in-law, Barbara (Sinclair) Rogers of Palm Coast, FL. Barbara was married to Eileen’s older brother, Irving, who was killed in action just five days before he was to return home from France following the end of WWII.
