A walk with Shannon: Elmwood Trail

|Shannon Warren|

Just on the outskirts of New Gloucester, in West Pownal, Elmwood is a well marked, smooth trail that connects to the Tryon Mountain trail.

The two mile, out and back path meanders through the woods showcasing rock walls, an array of soaring evergreen and deciduous trees, the occasional signs of wildlife and glimpses of Chandler Brook. Although much of the walk winds along higher ground, the river is accessible at one point where the path dips into a valley and a smaller off-shoot leads to the waters edge. I enjoyed the trail on a misty day when no other hikers were present and aside from wind rusting the leaves and the occasional bird song, the woods were very quiet.

Great for walkers, joggers, and four legged companions, I would rate this trail as moderate due to several gradual inclines and two water crossings (one by stepping stones and one by a low lying log bridge) which may not be an issue during drier months.

Directions: From Pineland take Allen Rd to the stop sign and turn right onto Elmwood Rd. Follow Elmwood Rd for .7 miles to the trailhead on the left.
